4 Ways to Plan for Your Respite

Waking up in the middle of the night to provide incontinence care or skipping meals because valuable time is limited– caregivers have a knack for selflessness. And while these good intentions offer better living conditions for their loved ones, these can also be their catch-22.

What Is Respite Care?

“Respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers. It can be arranged for just an afternoon or for several days or weeks. Care can be provided at home, in a healthcare facility, or at an adult day center.” – National Institute on Aging

Caregiving can be just as rewarding as it is exhausting. Many family caregivers, most especially those untrained for the responsibility, experience bouts of burnouts that can be toxic to their general wellness. In fact, AARP, Inc. has discovered that a “38 percent of family caregivers rate their job as emotionally stressful.”

For caregivers, there’s not enough time – or maybe no time at all – for their much needed personal space when dealing with an overwhelming list of to-dos every day. Practicing self-care and embracing their own respite may seem like a far-fetched idea when they keep on plowing through their caregiving jobs. Taking short-term breaks can keep them up and about for the long haul.

Planning for Your Respite

We understand it’s not easy finding time for respite, but these 4 ways might offer help:

  1. Understand your needs.
How much time do you need to take a break from caregiving? Four hours a day? Twice a week? Similarly, try to identify and make a list of your loved one’s care needs. Knowing these essentials are handy when it’s time to explore your care options.
  2. Re-calibrate your daily to-dos.
Maybe you’ll be able to fulfill your personal pursuits if you organize your daily tasks better. Strategize – Combine tasks whenever possible and omit those routines that aren’t necessary. Try to put self-care on top of your list.
  3. Inform your family and sit through this conversation with them.
Tell them about your concerns and gather all the help you can get from them. Maybe they can take turns in caring for your loved one when you’re away, share in some of your responsibilities, or brainstorm other care solutions together. Don’t forget to include your loved one in the meeting. Their opinions and suggestions matter.
  4. Explore your care options.
If family meetings were unproductive, investing in professional Senior Care in Nevada might be best for you. There are many caregiving alternatives you can count on. 1. Thank you for mentioning that you need to know how long you should take off from providing care. My friend stated that, for the sake of his own mental health, he has to take a break from caring for his parents. I will ask him for how long he wants to take a break and assist him in finding short-term respite care providers.
